The nuns at Laphag Nunnery

are very grateful for your support

Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo has been helping the nuns in Laphag Nunnery since 2006 by building simple dwellings on land provided near Khampagar Monastery in Tibet. The nuns spent several months a year at these dwellings to receive teachings, then return to their nunnery site for practice and retreat.

Lhapag Nunnery is the sister Nunnery to Khampagar Monastery – the seat of Khamtrul Rinpoche. The nuns here are all serious practitioners of many years. Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo’s main teacher, the previous Khamtrul Rinpoche, requested Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo to create Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery. The current 9th Khamtrul Rinpoche asked her to support Laphag Nunnery and so it has a special connection to Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery.

Since 2006 Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo has been helping the nuns at Laphag Nunnery by raising funds to build simple dwellings on land provided near Khampagar Monastery in Tibet. Initially, the nuns lived in cotton tents, continuing to practice through the harsh Tibetan winters at high altitude and below-freezing temperatures. Given this, attention to helping the nuns’ living situation was critically urgent.

Due to the generosity of donors across the globe over the years, now 108 small flat-roofed houses and a central kitchen are built on the mountainside.  However, donations are still needed for further housing and eventually to enlarge and renovate their present very basic Temple. Drubga Rinpoche who is the abbot of Khampagar Monastery in Tibet (and a nephew of the 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche) is overseeing the needs of the Nunnery which now has 130 nuns spending the winter in the new huts.  More nuns are spending summer at Laphag but then forced to return to their family home during winter. The intention for 2017 is to raise sufficient funds to build another 100 houses (retreat huts) for many new applicants waiting to join the community as well as provision to cover their basic needs.

Currently, the estimated cost for each retreat hut dwelling is $2,500. Inflation has increased costs but any amount would be gratefully accepted for the nuns’ basic needs as well as ongoing and future construction. Dongyu Gatsal Ling Initiativeswishes to help these Tibetan nuns and invites you to be part of the merit of building Laphag Nunnery and providing a safe environment for these devoted women practitioners in Tibet.
